About the Friesner Herbarium Digital Collection

The Friesner Herbarium Digital Collection currently contains more than 20,000 images of plant specimens, collected through out Indiana, from the Butler University Friesner Herbarium. This collection includes fern, orchid, and sunflower specimens along with plants in the bean, buttercup, figwort, mint, mustard, rose, lily, pink, carrot, and forget-me-not families, plus non-Carex sedge members of the sedge family.  At this point, more than 1200 species are covered in this collection.

This digital collection was developed by the Friesner Herbarium and Butler University Libraries, with most of the digital images created by Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis University Library. The goal is to make images of all of the 43,000 Indiana plant specimens in the Butler University Friesner Herbarium available to the public.  We are currently looking for funding to complete the project.

Much of the work done so far was supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Indiana State Library. The collection can also be accessed through the Indiana Memory site.
