And to the Thessalonians, to perfect that which was lacking in their faith," i. e. " that their hearts might be established unblame-able in holiness "- 1 Thes. 3: 10, 13. This same gift and second grace of heart holi-ness the Apostle desired to come andhelp the Corinthians in possession of. Hence said he, " Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the. flesh. and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."— 2 Cor. 7: 1. " And this also we wish, even your perfection." " Finallyabrethren, fare- I well : be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace, and. the God of love and peace shall be with you."- 2 Cor. 13: 9: 11. So- the apostle Paul was an earn-est teacher of a second grace, which he calls perfection, perfected holiness, a state of grace reached by a work of grace, which cleansed the flesh and spirit from all filth-iness, ram al impurities. And this, as we are to show in the sec-ond place, is a doctrine of the New Testa-ment. We can only take space to cite a few of the numerous passages in proof of this point. We will begin with the first converts to the faith once for all delivered to the saints. They believed in Christ— Mark 9: 42, and hence were " born of God." John 1: 12, 13. Accordingly they " follow-ed Christ in the regeneration"— in the re-generated state.— Mat. 19: 28. But that they were not yet wholly sane-tilled is evident because flue Saviour, after all the above facts in their experience, prayed the Father to sanctify them.— Jno. 17: 17. Which second grace they receiv-ed on the day of Pentecost,. Acts 2. The people believed on Christ when Philip preached in Samaria, were baptized, and had great joy, doubtless, being par-doned of their sins. But afterward, as a second grace, they received the Holy Ghost, whom Christ in John 14 declared the world, sinners, could not receive. See Acts 8: 12- 16. The Roman believers had furnished the Apostle satisfactory evidence of genuine conversion. See Rom. 1: 6 ; 15: 14. And vet he taught them a second grace. See Rom. 1: 11 ; 5: 2; 12: 1, ; 15: 13, 15, 16. The same twofold process of salvation can be traced in all the epistles. But we will only call attention to 1st The s. In chapter 1: 2- 6 their first grace of regener-ation is clearly seen. Nor had. they back-slid up to the time of the Apostle's writing. See 3: 6- 9. Butnotwithstanding the good experience they had received and imin-tain. ed, they were taught a Second and per feeling grace. See 1 Thes. 3: 10, 13 ; 4; 2, 3, 7; 5: ') 3, 24. Third, what is the province of this sec-ond grace ? The Scriptures already cited should be sufficient to show its nature, but let us a little farther examine the matter. We have oceasionly met with the idea that the second grace is no cleansing at all, but only an infusion of power. This is a very congenial doctrine to the " old. man." Neith-er is the devil afraid of all the power men can get without a pure heart. There is no mortifieation or crucifixion in praying for an infilling of power. But to confess the old man of sin in the heart, and then get down humble enough in the sight of God to have him slain, that is the way of the cross, the way of the Bible. Another false doctrine is this: " Regen-eration gives us a pure heart. The second grace destroys the animal passions, and lusts of the flesh ( body)." We quote the above from a letter before us. What are animal passions ? Surely a proper answer would be, such passions as man possesses in common with the lower animals. Such as conjugality, the pairing instinct, seen in some species of the animal kingdom ; am-itiveness, the procreative passion ; parent-al love, love of offspring : combativeness, resistance, defence, courage, etc.; destruct-iveness, which is executiveness, force and Flee out of the midst of babylon and deliver ev ery nine his soul; be inso tth eea tti mofef 0in t hheer L ionridq'us ivtye; n gfoear ntcheis; he will render unto her a recompense rAonwd ftohre ela vnedr ysghuailTl ot rseem obf leth, ea Lnodr dso. r-shall he performed against babylon, to make the land of babylon a deso- 14ion without an inhabitant.— Jer. l: G. 29' These are about all the passions that can propeily be denominated animal passions, and not one of them is destroyed in our salvation. They are all of God's own cre-ation, hence He does not destroy thenabut sanctifies them all under the law of holi-ness to their natural and Divinely intend-ed use. What then is the effect produced by the second grace ? All the justified soon find that they have an evil fallen nature that impedes their religious progress, and dis-turbs their new- born peace with God. But where is this inbred foe located, which is, cleansed out by the second grace ? We have seen that it is not " animal passions" adhering in the physical body, as a certain sin confused soul teaches. It istrue that evil nature is called the" flesh," from sarkawhich is often used with reference to moral evil in raen's spiritual and mental being,. We read, " For the flesh lusteth against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh ; and these are contrary the one to the other," etc— Gal. 5: 17. That this is the dual state of the justified is admitted by all holiness teachers, and must be admitted by all men, because the sinner does not possess the divine Spirit. And now we are told that the flesh here means the physical bod-y. But read ver. 24 : " And they that are Christs ( i e., wholly given to Him ac-cording to Rom. 12: 1) have crucified the flesh, with the affections and lusts " Cru-cify means to put to death Have these venders of their new theory committed lit-eral suicide ? If only the lusts of the flesh were to be crucified, we might interpret the flesh as meaning the physical body, but since the flesh itself is crucified, put to death, and yet we have not literally expir ed, it is evident the flesh in such passages does not refer to the corporeal body. If we follow the Word there is no trouble to understand this. " Knowing this that OUT old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed."— Rom. 6: 6. It is the body of sin that is crucified. Long before Paul's physical body was de-stroyed, he said, " I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless, I live."— Gal. 2: 20. The lately concocted theory teaches that regeneration makes us perfectly pure in heart, spirit and soal; but that entire sanctification only removes sin out of the physical flesh. Gal. 5; 19- 21 is quoted as evidence. But is any one foolish enough to refer " envy, hatred, emulation," etc., to the physical man. Can matter hate, emu-late and envy ? That the " flesh" in the above Scripture refers to evil in the men-tal and spiritual realm of man is evident from the fact that it is associated with the mind. The same word, sarkos, occurs in Roth 8: 6 as follows : " For to be earnal-ly ' minded is death." Rendered in the Emphatic Diaglott thus: " For the mind of the flesh ( 8th Los) is death." It also reads the same in the direct from the G- reek. Now we all know that literal flesh does not possess a mind, but that mind per-tains to man's spiritual being. " Because the carnal mind is enmity against (. 3- od." ver. 7. " The mind of the flesh (& a, 108) is enmity to God."— Emphatic. So then they that are in the flesh ( sae-ki,) cannot please God "— Born 8: 9. If this evil element called the flesh were the physical of man he could not please God until after putting off the same in natural death. But the flesh to be crucified is spiritual depravity. The theory - that our spiritual being is made perfectly pure in regeneration, and is not further cleansed in the second grace is positively proved to be false in 2 Cor. 7: 1 ; " Having there forethese promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." Here the flesh, used in con-tradistinction to the spirit, is evidently the physical, as it is often so used, as well as in relation to the body of sin. Perfected holiness, the second grace, is the result of cleansing both soul and body, both the physical and spiritual of man. From the the former it purges out all unnatural ap-petites, from th e latter all unholy tempers, unto me every one that stealetil shall. bo oak ott on this side according tett; and eery one that woaretli shalt ha cal ert` oh Ma* asfea7 li rricEtt OdX ° SI tnra t° h + 8r thhea: IF: en tt„ to Me, Whasees ou? r t The assertion that regeneration makes the heart perfectly pure, and that entire sanctification does not affect the heart, the seat of our affections, is positively proved false by many Scriptures " The works of the flesh" in Gal. 5, which the new ` heresy admits are cleansed out in entire sanctifi-cation, the Son of Go] says proceed from the heart: .4, For from withth, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adul-teries, fornications, murders, thefts, covet-gumless., wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness." — Mark 7: 21, 22. The inward source of these thMgs is man's evil fallen nature, the old man. Their root or tendency exists in the j ustified; " but if he lives after the flesh" or gives way to these evil lusts he sins, and spiritually dies. So while the sinner is the servant and slave of sin, the justified have all sins removed, and they keep inbred sin in subjection. But the wholly sanctified have both sins remitted and the evil root or bent of sinning destroyed. Since, there-fore, the heart is the source of the works of the flesh their destruction involves a puri-fication of the heart. " Cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded."— James 4; 8. Bro. Achor gives us the fol-lowing thoughts in this text: c, For sin-ners to cleanse then.. hands is to cease from those acts of sin that they have commit-ted. But who is meant by the double minded man ? A sinner has only one mind, and that is to disobey Gal A man with a pure heart has only one mind, and that is the mind of Christ. Therefore it must be a man that has been born of the Spirit, but has not received the second grace. Such doubleminded are commanded to purify their hearts. Therefore the second grace is a purification of the heart" That the second grace of entire sanctifi-cation is a work of perfect heart pmifica-tion is incontrovertably established by Acts 15: 8, 9 : " And God which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as He did unto us ; and put no difference between us and them purifying their hearts by faith." God put no difference between the first recipients of the Holy Ghost on the day of entecost and the Gentiles who were saved afterward. And in all cases when they received the Holy Ghost He purified their hearts by faith. Other Scriptures are not needed Satan knows very - wren that the heart of man is the seat of affections, and out of it are the issues of life, therefore he requires his preachers as much as posdhle to call attention from heart cleansing sal-vation to every other device that he has invented. But " blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." EXPERIENCE OF SALVATION AND HEALING. " And lie shall send nis angeiswith a great sound a a Trumpet, and they shall gather together Ms elect from the four winds, from one end of heav - en to the other. Now learn a parable of the fig tree; when his branch is yet tender, and patteth forth leaves. ye know that summer is nigh. So likewise ye when ie shall see all them things, know that it is nPar, even at the di ors."— Mark. DEAR SAINTS' OF Gore— I will write some of my experience of God's dealings with me, more especially for the encouragement of those who have more recently entered upon the King's highway. I- left the land. of Egypt some 25 years ago, and crossed over Jordan to the promised pos-session some nine years after, since which time I have found it good to walk in all the light I have been permitted to receive. When the " evening light" came, it found me doubly chained with the bands a the enemy, having been a Methodist and also an invalid for 15 years. My disease had become chronic, and after five years my eyes failed me in sympathy with a nerve of weakness, and though not blind, or entire-ly helpless, yet I was not able to read a page, or sew a yaid of cloth for nearly ten years. I was shut out from the world a& it were, until the time promised when God should pour out of His Spirit upon all flesh," and set the captives free. Seven years ago I heard of a people called saints, " who went up to the feast" yearly at Bangor, to worship God, in the good old why; and that God was saying to the remnant of the camp of Israel, in these " later days, go forward, for from hence-forth I will be in the midst of thee." I heard of mighty works being wrought through the holy child Jesus, and I said in my soul, If God permits I too will touch the hem of his garment and be made whole. Another Meeting three months later found me at the same place where I presented myself for the healing of my eye& God bad a'second work in viewi and because of this and for my good He permitted me to become especially burdened with desire for the healing of my eyes at this time. I had suffered much more with my eyes than otherwise for a long time, that I had been obliged to rest my body until I fan-cied that with their recOveiy I would feel quite well. God heard and answerad pray-er, and in the instant of the exercise of faith I reached for a fine print Bible which was lying near me, and read nearly two chapters with comfort. 0- praise our God and let us exhalt His holy name together. I returned to my Northern home, and began to undertake the demands of the same, when within one week I began to realize that the original disease was being aggravated with my effort: to labor, and that I needed an en-tire healing. I was two. hundred miles a-way from any body that I knew of who had a living faith, and as my condition be-came worse and worse, I cried mightily un-to God to deliver me from all infirmity. I tried to pray believingly, but when an ache or pain followed I thought, surely, God has not healed . me or I would not feel so. Several weeks passed, when at a time of much suffering I was led to set apart a time for fasting, the same as they did at Bangor. I asked God to reveal to me what was lacking on my part, and while waiting thus before Him I was led to take up a Gospel Trumpet - which I had not read. My eyes first rested upon the ex-perience of a sister who had been healed of the same disease. She said that when hands were laid upon her far healing she was in great pain, and afterwards she was still in pain, but according to God's Word she was healed He gave her strength to get up and go about, and as she continued to believe strength was given, and the pain passed away. She said at one time she was again in pain, and she asked the Lord why it was He showed her that it was not the old disease but only a test of faith, also at another time when a sense of wear-mess came on without cause, that it was not the old disease, but only a test of faith, all of which passed away when her faith was lifted above her feelings. And that we must not ask God to heal us, and then wait to see, but get up and do as if we had what we have asked for. . All this was like a message from heaven to me. My prayer was answered. I read the same twice over, and then fell upon my knees with the paper in my hand, and asked God God to touch me with His healing power, and make me every whit whole. I claimed what I had asked for, and arose declaring within myself that I was healed, with no other evidence than God's Word. That was enough, and I was indeed made whole from that hour. God has required me to walk by faith many times for a long while. I have passed through sore billows of trib-ulation, when my flesh has consumed away, as it were, and my life had well nigh gone out only for His faithfulness to me. I have been led in ways which seemed be-yond understandMg, but having committed myself wholly into our Father's hands, I have found comfort from the life example of ourLord, wherein none were ever so misun-derstood as He was, and yet He was without sin and blameless. I can see why among all the Christian graces, that of charity is more preminently set forth as the most needful. God grant us mountains of charity toward each other who are walldng honestly in all His known will. About three years ago I be- came conscious of a lack in my soul ; I did. not know why, but I was not satisfied, and lest the enemy might have ensnared me in some way through the deceivableness of sin, I prostrated myself alone before God, laid by my relation to ray former expeii-ence as a thing of the past, and covenanted anew with Him as at the first. Not very long after I heard the voice of the Spirit leading me forward to an advanced. experience. I was led to fast andlisten to what He might say, and while waiting thus before Him the words of Isiah were applied : " Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations, spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes. For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is His name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel ; the God of the whole earth shall He be called For the Lord hath called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth when. thou wast refused, saith thy God. For a small moment have I forsaken thee ; but with great mercies will I gath-er thee. In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment ; but with ever-lasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer." God has indeed verified. His Word to me, and my soul has been reaching out into the sweet beyond where the deep waters flow, and where my every desire is met in Him , who is my life, my all evermore. Your sister. J_.- E. I did not find one really righteous minister. But some seemed as though they would like to be saved. Then I called on the leading ones of each sect, and found some saved up to all the light they had. A few got saved, and one sister sanctified. Many know not what to do, or where to go to get some spiritual food. One brother said. he had been fed on chaff and wind. So each sect has some honest souls, who are like sheep without a shepherd. They want the truth preached to them. But if not practical to bring provisions and tent, there will be no trouble to make yourself comfortable if you just bring bed-ding. Of course if this can not be done, if the Lord leads, come anyway. But we think it seldom that people need to come to camp without something to cover them during the night. If you come by R. The last meeting which we held was three miles east of Davis City, I. in a school house, four e-venings and one day. Five dear souls obeyed the Lord and went down into the - water and were baptized, and arose from she watery grave to walk in newness of life. More will obey in the near future. Any of God's ministers calling there will find a hearty welcome, although when we first went there was much prejudice against the truth, but light broke in upon their hearts after awhile, it being so near the latter day saints or Mormon stronghold they thought every body that claimed to be a saint was a Mormon, but the blessed Lord helped us to prove to them quite different. From your brother under the blood. J. L. June. INDIAN SPRINGS, MO MAY 14TH _ 1891. DEAR SAINTS:— I feel led of the Lord to write ray testimony with a report of the good work done at Neash. Bro. and sister Sunderland and myself commencedtheeting there April the 21st, and closed. May the 12th. Bro. Stanbery came in the second week, and did good service the rest of the meeting. We gave the truth, and the Holy Spirit came with it, and sealed it on the hearts of the people. And wonder-ful cenviction rested on the people. There were tweenty seven souls professed salva-tion. Eleven converted and sixteen sancti-fied. Last Sabbath nine souls were buried with Christ in baptism. And on Monday night we had a blessed ordinance meeting-ours in the love and patience of Jesus. There were tweenty seven took part in F. N. sk: Susie A. Jacobson. washing one anothers feet, as- Jesus'' com-manded. On Tues-day evening while finishing the prepara-tions for the meeting, we had the long look-ed for pleasure of meeting face to face with dear Bro. and sister Clayton who had just arrived from their hone Arroyo Grande, GO miles distant. Your humble brethren upon the Gospel Altar. Ludolph Shroder & J. IV. Byers. MIURN, IND. MAY 13, 1891. DEAR SAINTS OP GOD:— We begun meet- ' ing in Bro. Green's house 5 . miles south - east orLima, Ind. Apr. 19th and continued till May 3rd with the exception of a few nights. The precious Gospel has been _ greatly cursed and. hindered by back- - islidings, dishonest walk and crooked lives me mere professors in that country in the past, which might have been the scene of grand results and victories for God and , O. salvation. However those who were will-g oval wady to walk out in the light and cOno up to t I: e Bible standard were cleared up in their experience, and several at-i tained unto the grace and perfect victory 11 entire holiness ; while a few we were o Ieavt in no better or rather worse condition because they refused to walk out o the light and fully square up with pure Word. ' The 5th, dear brother d sister Hart conveyed us to our much loved Bro. Y oder's kind home near Brush- ' rairie, where we enjoyed a pleasant and rest and a prayer meeting with oved saints in that vicinity. There several healed of the Measles, some } In had them very bad, 1. u t the Lord e • tom all. Hallelujah! The 9th dear brother Yoder - conveyed us to father sedy's 3 miles north west of Angola, where • ined with the church over Sabbath were strengthened and encour-ie faith and grace of Jesus. One stifled, a iid anotber healed through Hallelujah ! We hope that God's -.- anointed ministers will visit that place shall soon hold ameeting at Kendall, ch., then go to the glorious Bangor C. until about eight months ago, when Bro's. Markwell and Isouck came into our neigh-borhood. I had always opposed sanctifi-cation and holiness. But God. made them stay at my house nearly a week, until wife and I were reclaimed, and then their work seemed to be done. Two weeks after I - went to hear Bro. Defore preach, and God made him come and stay over night with me. I obeyed Rom. 12- 1, and the follow-ing night I commenced praising God and have been full ever Since. Glory to His name Afterwards some Salvation Army boys came into our neighborhood to hold meeting. They seemed to be doing the best they knew. So wife and I took hold in the meeting with a will for God. The fire commenced to burn and spread. We were the only live ones in the meet-ing, meeting held on for about thirty nights, closing with about thiaty living witinesses twelve or fourteen new converts, the rest reclaimed backsliders and cold professors awakened. Thirteen were bap-tized, and we now have a good prayer meeting started. I think none have join-ed the Salvation ATmy or will do so. A Methodist has an appointment here, I think it is his object to feed the flock. Ezk. 34: 2, 3, 4. We pray the Lord to send us a good minister, for we fully believe a good work is done here, and if we get a wholly sancti-fied minister soon we will be able to hold these people for the Lord. Your brother justified by faith sanctified by the blood, and waiting to be revealed. S. Sinclair. NISIINABOTNA, MO. DEAR SAM'S OF THE MOST HIGH GREET-ING:— May grace mercy and peace be mul-tiplied unto you. I can say to- day to the glory of God, that Jesus fully saves me front sin, and I have the victory in my soul. Thanks be to God! He has said that our light afflictions which are but for a mo-ment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. And we find that this is Brought about by looking to Jesus. Hence Paul says in his letter to the Hebrews: " Look unto Jesus the au-thor( or beginner,) and finisher of our faith." 0, that we may by faith walk in Him, rooted and grounded in love : so that we may not be moved front the hope of the Gospel by the great mess of lies and slan-der that he is scattering around by his ser-vants. Remember that all things work together for good to them that love the Lord, and obey His holy Wold. I love to do the will of God in sickness or in health. Glory to Jesus I I love the lovely way of God, it is joy supreme to me. And I do not want any Zinzindoram nor the fault finding evil spirits that teach that false doctrine. r would say to all the saints of God to have no fellowship with them, but to follow the Lamb, and He will lead you in His ways of peace. I love to read the Trumpet, and find that its teachings har-monize with the Word, and many are sav-ed through reading the truth that it sends forth. Oi l pray the Lord to add His bless-ings, and direct His work. From your blood washed brother. A. A. Kinzie. BEAM, MISS. DEAR SAINTS:— I feel it would be to the glory of God to add my testimony. I love my blessed Savior. As far back as I can remember I joined. the Missionary church at 13 years of age, I think I lived an up-right life except in having • what I called fun with cards, which is the vice of the devil, and go to parties. Jesus cleansed me from that evil 8 years ago. Now I am saved and sanctified wholly. Your sister in Christ. Lizzie Robbertson. I do praise the Lord for healing brother. Bradley, and sending hint back to Wat-kinsville once more to comfort the saints, and warn sinners to repent. Many souls were made to rejoice, and I praise the Lord for the evening light. It is a blessed thing to trust the Lord for all things. I take Him for my physician. When Bro. Warner and company were here the Lord wonderfully healed my body through their prayers, and I have not taken any medicine since. I have counted the cost, paid the price, and have consecrated all to the Lord and am sanctified through obedience to His will. Pray for me and my husband that we may be true and loyal to God. Your sister. Louie Owens. — AUBURN, IND. APR. 12TH 1891. DEAR SAINTS— : I thank God this evening for a present salvation that saves me just now from all sin, and I am kept by the mighty power of God, ready to be reveal-ed in the last time. Oh, I have so much to thank the Lord for that I scarcely know where to begin. I have heard that the Gospel Trumpet was soon to be a weekly paper, and I do pray God that such may - be the case. I for one will pay my por-tion. I can scarcely wait from one time to the next to get my paper. Your Bro. saved and sanctified by a sec-ond work of grace. G. C. Lahnuni. In Cheshire, Mich. May 8th 1891 sister Martha E. Wilson exchanged this life of suffering for another life of eternal bliss and happiness. Her sufferings though very severe were borne with much patience, having victory in her soul from first to last. She gave advice to many friends on the subject of Christianity, exhorting sinners to turn to God, and saints to stand firm. She died in the full triumphs of faith, just at the last raising her hand toward heaven - exclaiming, " Beautiful! beautiful!" " Prec-ious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints." She would have been 49 years old the 7th of June. The funeral was held at the Rowe school house on Sunday the 10th of May. —: 0:-- , TAMEsTOWN, MICH. MAY 9T11 1891. DEAR READERS OF THE LORD:— We are very glad to report that we are still saved, and under the all cleansing blood, which keeps us pure and free. Since our last re port we have been engaged in several meetings. The Lord helped us to sow the seed, leaving God to give the increase. We just closed a meeting in Ganges Town-ship Allegan Co. With victory for King Je-sus. The Church was delivered from false ideas, and much strengthened and settled in the deeper things of God. Great convic-tion rested upon the people. Some got to the Lord and were saved, while others re-sisted their conviction, and are still lost. Three followed the Lord in the ordinance of baptism, witnessing their death to the world, and their resurrection to a new life in Christ Jesus. Bro. J. W. Daugherty-. and Bro. Cole joined with us in the meet-ings, who done good work for the Lord, From Ganges we all came here, commenc-ed meeting_ last night in the name of the Lord Jesus. • Our address will still be Grand Junction, Mich. I was afflicted and had to keep my bed sev-en weeks. Every one said I had the Con-sumption, and some told me I would be here but a short time. My suffering has been in-describable. But bless His holy name, He has healed me. I used a great deal of med-icine and received no relief, so quit taking medicine and wrote to the Trumpet for prayers for the healing of my back. Well bless God! I knew when the healing was going on in my back. Bless the name of God forever. We would love to have Bro. D. S. Warner and Co. to come out here and hold meeting. DEAR SAINTS: — I feel glad this morning for a present salvation, and although we are not rich - in this worlds goods I have a right to the tree of life. Satan has been hard after me, but God is as true as His Word, His grace is sufficient to ward of the enemy. He knows all my needs and is an all- sufficient Savior. Mrs. Viannah Crites. ALmERTA, NEB. r DEAR Bao.— I have been taking your paper for quite a while, and was very glad to read them, but they did not fit me just right at all times. But I kept on reading. I thought holiness was too big a word for us at the present age. I thought sanctified people only lived in old time. Now, dear brother in Christ, forsuch you are to me now, for your paper is right and I was wrong, I would be pleased to add my testi-mony with those of the dear brethren and sisters that I read in your paper. I believe it will be to the glory of God. Confession is good for the soul. I did not see how we could be holy in this lire until last Sabbath evening, when I was reading the Bible. Glory to God I He gave me faith to step out upon His promises. " Be ye holy for I am holy." 0 the blessing came. Glory to our blessed Lord! Vallentine embraced the evening light about four years ago, and has lived a good Christian life since , that time. The funeral was held at the Rowe school house in Cheshire on Saturday the 2nd of May. A. B. Palmer. FREE IN JESUS. 66 ROM the Son maketh free is free e2e) indeed." The Lord never in-tended that souls should be in bondage to sin and sectism. He created man in His own image ( in holiness) to glorify Aim, to do His will and not the will of man. In the sects men are not free, but in bondage with . a grievous yoke upon their neck, with straps and bands to bind them down. All this I now realize as I stand aloof from sin babel, and look upon her as a piece of fool- :: ishoesss, blinding souls and sending them down to eternal ruin. When I was con-verted I had never heard anything about holiness, and did not know that the sects were not the church, and as I had been taught that it was right and proper to join the church, not knowing that we were born into the Church by conversion, and that to stand outside was to be considered as in the world without hope, I gave my name to the preacher of the United Brethren. This society should now be called divided quarrelers as it is split into two factions, and each party are quarreling with the oth-er as to which is right. I did not here find everything at peace and harmony ; neith-er did I find the love existing that should e'ist among Christians. There were fre-quent eruptions that would mar the peace of all honest and sincere Christians. I no-ticed that the different societies did not fel-lowship each other as they should. They seemed to be jealous of each other, all of this I could not understand. I could not see why there should be a division be-tween God's children, and why those of different denominations could not fellow-ship each other as they should. When the Lord led me into the ministry, I saw this more clearly, but how to mend matters I could not tell, and was greatly puzzled o-ver the matter. I found there was confu-sion among the ministers; they were jeal-ous of each other, and would frequently work against each other in the conferences. This I knew was not right. I also found out another thing that troubled me greatly, the presiding elders whom I had looked upon as godly men, were not living up to their profession; some were guilty of one meanness and some of another, and all were more of less full of levity, engaging in foolish conversation that was not profit-able to the soul. When the Lord gave me light on the true Church I was ready to step out from all sects and be free. For this act I was censured, but praise the Lord. I would rather be a door- keeper in the house of the Lord than to sit or dwell in the tents of wickedness. While in the sect I was ruled by a presiding elder and had to obey orders, or run the risk of being re-ported to higher ecclesiastical powers, and get reprimanded by the bishop, or be set aside in disgrace; but I praise the Lord that I have no one to lord over me now but Jesus, who is my elder brother and the bishop of my soul. The Lord gave me the light on the true Church, and also the light on sanctification as a second work. I did not get it from man, neither was I led by man, and now I am preaching a free and full salvation from sin. God does not want His people in bondage but is calling ' hem to come out. I have been offered good salary to preach in the sect, but to go back and join the sect would be for- me to backslide and lose my soul, this I cannot . afford to do. their holes their tongues shall con- ( German through and through)..- 1 Thes. slime away in their mouth."- Zech. 14: 12. 5: 23. But I see another law in my members warring against the law of my mind, ( inward man " Hidden man 01 the heart" 1 Pet. 3: 4) and bringing me into captivity to the sin which is in my members," and declared by Christ to proceed from the heart. Mat. 13: 19. Mark 7: 21. Here we have two laws in our members proceeding from the heart : for from it are the issues of life. Because sin is in our members, mortal bodenetc., does not prove that it is not in our heart, for all that is in our heart is in our body; because our heart, spirit, etc. are in our body. But if lust, wickedness, anger and such like are in our body it is proved to be in our heart by Jesus Christ's own words, Mat. 15: 19: Mark 7: 21; Gen. 6: 5, etc. Our mem-bers are only the_ instruments ( arms or weapons- margin) of righteousness or unrighteousness.- Rom. 6: 13. WONDERFULLY HEALED OF CON-SUMPTION, AND SAvEn TO THE UTTERMOST. • DEAR Tauererr READERS:- The dear Lord has brought me up from such depths of weakness and affliction, suffering and dis-couragements into His great and glorious light, and' and so lovingly keeps me day by ; day that I feel I should tell it for His glory, and. with the hope and desire that it may encourage and lead some other sick and despairing soul to the great and mighty Physician, who so tenderly Booths and. heals both soul and body. I have nursed and buried my whole family con-sisting of husband and five children. Also two grandchildren, who were all victims to that terrible disease Consumption. The last of the family, my beloved son, was taken from me about eight months ago, during whose sickness and death I was brought low with nervous prostration and extreme grief. I used medicines until I found that they were of no earthly use to me, and I kept growing weaker and weak-er. A slowlingering fever, a severe cough, and a horrible feeling of suffocation caused by inflamation of the bronchial tubes caused me to give up all hopes of life. All those symptom kept increasing, coughed harder, had pain in my side and chest con-tinually, sometimes sharp and cutting, sometimes dull and aching, chills in the fore part of the day, and in the afternoon hectic fever, terrible night sweats, profuse expectoration, loss of appetite, swelling of the limbs, etc., which, beyond all doubts, were the last stages of Consumption. This was my condition when on the 14th of March 1891 Bro. J. W. Byers of this city called to see me, and asked me if I was a child of God, to which I could truthfully answer, yes. When he told me that God had provided for the healing of the body as well as for the soul, and that God is not the author of disease, and would heal all who would comply with His requirements, and_ grasp the promise for healing, I said, yes, I believe those promises for healing as much as any of the rest of God's Word, but did not seem able to claim them for myself. This dear brother dealt very plain-ly with me in taking me through a search-ing consecration, and. when I saw the re-quirements in order to believe I was sure that I could lay hold of the blessed Mas-ter, and never let him go until I was sanc-tified and healed. I was willing and ready tobe anointed for healing. Accordingly four of the Lord's elect met in my room at 4 P. M. the next day. The night before this had been a sleepless and restless one on account of my low physical coudition, but my faith was strong. These dear saint now offered up earnest prayer, which went up to the throne as incense, and was heard and answered by the Father. I shalinever forget the sweet consciousness of God's pres-ence filling that little room with a glory not of earth as my head was anointed with oil. Then once more thepromisegwere claimed forme, His sick and suffering child, while I lay passive at His feet. Then they be-gan softly to sing e She only touched the hem of His garment,'" and 0 praise His dear name forever! even as they uttered these words the mighty deed was done. Throw: h all my chilled and dying body th warm life blood went rushing. I felt the glow of anew life, a delicious warmth pen-etrated my clammy limbs, the pain and soreness left my throat and lungs, I breathed with ease, and raising myself up in bed I stretched out my hands and exclaimed, 0 thank God! I am healed. I cannot find words to express the peace and joy that fills all my soul and body as I realize that am again a well woman. That night my rest was so sweet and unbroken by either cough or sweating, and nest morning I arose and dressed myself without assistance, walked through one large room to the front door, looting out upon this beautiful world which I thought I should never see again, thenwalked back to the kitchen, went to the table and ate a hearty breakfast, for with this new life came a hearty appetite for food. I can now; and have from that day been able to go about my work, often walking a half mile or more to church without fatigue. Blest and kept " exceed-ing abundantly above all I could ask or think." My body is not only healed but my spiritual life is so wonderfully renewed and strengthened. The dear Lord does graciously- fulfill His promise to " keep in perfect peace all those whose minds are stayed on Him." Your sister sanctified and healed. Eliza C. Stubbs. _ SAN DIEGO, CAL. And to the Thessalonians, to perfect that which was lacking in their faith" i. It istrue that evil nature is called the" flesh" from sarkawhich is often used with reference to moral evil in raen's spiritual and mental being,. We read, " For the flesh lusteth against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh ; and these are contrary the one to the other" etc— Gal. But is any one foolish enough to refer " envy, hatred, emulation" etc., to the physical man. I was shut out from the world a& it were, until the time promised when God should pour out of His Spirit upon all flesh" and set the captives free. One brother was willing to board a man filled with the Spir-it of God, and help pay his way there. I hope God will send some one here soon to give the people the light of God." - This is a blessed way to hunt the real sheep of the Great Shepherd that are scat-tered and bewildered in the mists and fogs of sectism. 0, that God had ten thousand servants and handmaidens ready to search out every town and city. 0 Lord, send thy fishers and fish, them, and thy hunters and hunt them. She leaves a babe but two weeks old, and afather, mother, one sister and two brothers to mourn their loss. But their loss is her eternal gain. Mrs. Edwin Stockwell: Died— in Cheshire, Mich. Apr. 30th 1891, Bro. Absalom Vallentine, aged 72 years, 11 mo's. and 25 days. Bro. 14: 12. 5: 23. Some of them are named ' et. 4: 3 and in James 4: 1. These war in your members. In verse 4 one is named, viz. adultery. Now look at Rant. 7: 2: 1.-" I delight in the law of God after the inward man ; ver. 23. But I see another law in my members warring against the law of my mind, ( inward man " Hidden man 01 the heart" 1 Pet. 3: 4) and bringing me into captivity to the sin which is in my members" and declared by Christ to proceed from the heart. Mat. 13: 19. Mark 7: 21. Here we have two laws in our members proceeding from the heart : for from it are the issues of life. Therefore " To whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteous-nessd"--- Rom. 6: 16. 6: 13. Please ex-mine Gal. 5 beginning at ver. 19 : " Now the works of the flesh are manifest which are these : ad ultery, fornication, uncleanness, la-sciviousnessidolatry, witcheraft, hatred, etc. Whole Catalogue of evil lusts which Paul calls " your members which are upon the earth" in Col. 3: 5, and which Christ says proceed from the heart. Mat. 15: 19-" For outof the heart( yes, out of the heart not the animal nature) proceeds evil thoughts, mur-ders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witnesses, blasphemies ; these are the things that defile a man. Again in Mark 7: 21-" For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murder, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness ; all these evil things - come from . within, and defile the man. Where is the trouble? Shall we believe Jesus Christ - or the wresting of these Scriptures byfalse teachers ?
