God never tried to scare ~tny one iuto lwuven, but he has made some very solemn warnings to this lost world, and to the few redeemed souls in it, of his fearful wrath UPOll those who depart from his holy law. One man sinllcd and lost his holiness; a city sinned and was destroyed with fire and brimstone from heaven; a nation sinned and was, rejected; seven nations sinned and were driven out of the goodly 1and of Canaan. angels sinned and were cast down to hen; a world sinned and was destroyed with a flood; but all these things are just ens am pIes of the mighty power of a sinavenging God-even the same God that made all thihgs with his hand and who became the author of eternal salvation to all that obey him, and is also the author of everlasting punishnlent to those that obey not his gosp-el. It is a righteous thing with God to execute his judgments upon them that trouble him and his people. He is now extending offers of mercy and pardon to this world, but when the door· of his mercy closes, he then will frown on the calamity of a ruined world, and at the anguish of that poor soul who wilfully made choice of the regions of the lake of eternal despair in preference to t!lat heaven of light which is so freely offered to poor sinful man here below. "Who art thou that repliest against God~" "I kill and I make alive ; I wound, and I heal. " Hath not the potter power over the clay to make one vessel unto honor, and another to dishonor? "Behold, therefore the goodness and severity of God' on them that fell, severity; but toward thee,' goodness, if "thmt continue in his goodness) otherwise thou also shalt be cut off." J. E. Mark 7: 20-23. This is a true picture of the unregenerate heart which has notliing good in it. ~"'here are ;two ;ources of evil thoughts! First. .The devil himself, directly. Second. A corrupt heart. From either of these sources evil thoughts may be presented to a child of God, but from neither can our hearts be defiled, if we are kept under the cleansing blood of Christ. The Word of God clearly teaches us that we may have a clean heart, which means, clean from all sin and moral defilement, and therefore" we see that the description given in the text, is not that of a child of God. The presentation of an evil thought to the mind of a child of God is no sin, neither does it defile our mind and thoughts, to have such things presented to us, if we but make use of our God-given protection. "Bringing into captivity every thought" to the obedience of Christ.'· 2,Cor. 10: 5. Therefore,w hether an evil thought comes t() us from the devil, direct, or from some wicked person, it is at once captivated, and banished, and we are undefiled. Praise God for, the precious cleansing bl()od of Christ, and the Holy Spirit, the greater one, enthroned within. J.W.B. " 1 • TRIAI..S. BY FLOSSIE E. OLIVER. Trials are stepping-stones to heaven if we go through them as God designed we should. But " if we get our eyes off of Jesus and get them on the trials, we shall l'eceive no benefit, but shall become discouraged.' The Lord permits us to pass through trials in order to' draw us closer to him, also to try our faith which trying, the 'VIT ord says, is more precious than of gold that perisheth. Many times while in trial, instead of holding still and letting God have his way, we begin asking him to lift the trial. Perhaps we have asked God to take us through anything he thought best in order to purify our hearts and take those things out of our lives which wete un1ike him. Then we forget all about our prayer. In a short time we get in a deep trial, perhaps the. furnace of affliction; then we wonder why God permitted all these things to come upon us. But if we sto.p and think, we shall remember telling-him to take us through ·any~ thing he thought best, and now our prayer is being answered. vV' e should pray with an understanding and believe we receive what we ask for, but not expect it to come. the way we think best for pur "Jvay, is not alway'~ .God's wa~.
