S. A., THURSDAY, APRIL 16, 1908. NUMBER 16. savor:-" goo~ for nothing." There are many of tIllS class III the world to-day. It is the duty of all men to keep God's commandments, but there are· only a very few who are fulfilling· their obligations to their Master. Do not speak harshly. Hard words harden hcarts. Speak softly. "A soft answer turneth a'\v.ay wrath" and softens the heart. If your light as a Ohrist:an does not shine brightly enough to reveal your good works to mell, it is too dim to reveal your righteousness at the Bridegroom's coming. Just as the light of a candle will go out when placed under a bushel,- so will the light of a ChriRtian go out when prevented from showino ' ~orth deeds of kindness and love in the name of Christ. A brother 011ce remarked ill his discourse that since he had taken Jesus as his Savior and Heal~ er .11~ hacl·taken no medicine. According to the Word of Goel he needed none. Man lost his love for God when he departed from His law in Eden, but God never lost His love for man. See John 3: 1G. Prophesying, casting out devils, and doing wonderful works does not pave our way to heay~ en nor warrant us as rightful heirs to that everlasting inheritance. Heaven is being prepared and preserved for the holy. One of the fruits of the Spirit is faith (fa.~th~ fulness-R. V.). How can a person bear good fruit without that which produces it ~ How can a person be spiritual ,vithout the Holy Spirit ¥ SOME SOLEMN THOUGHTS. BY LUCENA C. BEARDSLEE. God has placed us in this world. We CaIl not stay her~ always. We all know we mu.st sometime die. "It is appo~nted unto men once to die, but'" after this the judgment." Heb. 9: 2i. We can not escape death, neither can we escape the judgment. "Know thou, that for aU these things God will bring thee into judgment." Eecl. 11: 9. Death and the judgment are cC'r~ taill, but life is yery uncertain. "We do not know when we 111ay be summoned before the great Judge. ,Vith these solemn truths before us, should we not consider well the ,\yords of the apostle: "'rh'3 ltord is not slack concerning his promist·, as some TIlen count slackness; lmt is long-suffering to US~ ward, not willing that auy should perish, hut that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord 'will come as a thief in the ui,'"r h,t., in the which the hea-vens shall pass nsray with "a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that al'etherein shall be burned up. Seeing then tlhlt all these things shall he dissol vce1. ,\\·hl1t mann~r of persons ought ye to be in all 'holy eonver~a· ron and godliness, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God?" 2 Pet. 3: 9·12. God in his love and fa:thfnlness has given un· to us many solemn warnings. He has made a. '\vay of escape fro111 sin and wicb:dnesR, that we might live a rig1lteous life and meet him in pence. Thank God! All should be glad to ac~ cept cleliverunce from sin, but 011. how few 9.l'e will:llg to humble their hearts before God! It was then that the ax: V{as laid at the root of the trees. Hope is the Christian's anchor. See Col. 1: 27. It is fastened in God by having Ohrist within us. Read 1 Tim. 4: 10, Heb. 6: 18, 19. Sin is a reproach to any people; and the bigger one's profession of Ohristianity, the more sin reproaches the one who commits it. A sinning religion is the devil's kind. That is the kind he preaches and the way he lives. Vve read, "How shall we eseape if we npg;~ !lect so great salvation ?" l\IanY souls have neglected salvation until too late .. They did lwt intend to. 'l'hey expected to he saved some llay and to gain heaven, but death Q\·(·rtook thNll. They had to go. This should be a '.varning to us. ,Ve shoulcl sce to it that we love amI serve 'God now. "Behold1 noW is the ac('C'ptecl time; beho1cl, noW is tIle day of salvation. ~ ~ Since tl1e ~gospel of snl vation has come to this world,J~t1,;~,~~;,):J.~.peen God's threshing fioor. J .. E,t. F.t. Knowing these sober facts, should we not seek to walk humbly before the Lord' )luy God help us to consider 'well these tI'lltlUI. "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his connnandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For Gl)d shall bring every ,york into judgment, with every secr-et thing, whether it be good, or whether it be eyi1. n ;E1ccl. 12: 131. 14.
