God wants us to so live before him that we shall neither be a stumbling-block for others to stumble over, nor to stumble at some one else's fail ures and unfaithfulness. J. E. F. If we live in prayer and meditation as we should God will tear>h u.s each day something more of himself. The greatest scholars acquired their knowledge by learning a little each day. Our growing in- the lmowledge of God should be constant. When the shadows of evening fall around you <lnd you can not recall allY manifestation of God to you or any thing learned or any deeper vision of him or the Ohristian life through the day, that day has not been lived as it should. The day may l1ave been a day of trial, sturm, and darkness to you; but it is in the trial and storm that we often learn the most of God if we will look for the lesson he is wanting to teach our hearts. O. E. O. 4 1 • THE ROAD TO SUCCESS. Many Christians are longing to be more spiritual, to have a closer walk with God, and enjoy more of his sweet presence 'with them. Well, you can have all these if you will set about it in the right way. 1'here are people who expect too much. We find it so in every vocation of life. Because they can not find something by which they can grow rich in 'a few 'days, they do nothing. While they ·are sittin. g: down waiting for something' to turn u2 by which they may make a fortune in a day, others around them are making small gain each day and thus acquiring riches. Do not expect to grow too fast in the grace of God. vVe have seen those who sprang up speedily and became noted for their spirituality in a short time and went dO'wn about as suddenly as they carne up. Those who are the most spiritual and most used of God are those who have COllle up s~owly ancl through much trial and tears and prayers. vVe have seen some, too, who would run well for a while and then cease to run until they hfl.d lost about all they had gained, then they would start up again and grow rapidly for a time, and then again retrograde; and then they have been going on for years and are no farther now than when they started. The 1vay to spiritual wealth is to make some gain every day and to be satisfied with small gains, but to gain a little daily, We remember the story we read when a school· boy of a race between a tortoise and a hare. '1'he l1are bounded off at a greatspeec1 and left the tortoise so far behind that he thought he could lie down and sleep a while and then get up and win the race. But the tortoise plodding slowly along passed the sleeping hare and won the race. Some are always expecting to become more spiritual; they are going to draw closer to the Lord, but they do not do it. . Do not think you can grow up to great heights of spirituality in a few days. It will reQuire constant growing' for years perhaps. Do not be discouraged because you do not grow fast enough. rrrue spiritual gains are slowly made in these days. It is only by persistent effort that any gains can be. made at alL If yon would like to be real close to God, be willing to 'work hard and to make small gain. Be content to come a little closer each day, but never let a day go by without gaining at some point, and after a while you will have accumulated spiritual l~iches. Do not despise. the day of small things. vV' e have known those who, because they could not get three dollars a day, would not work ataH; and' then we have known others who, if they could not get a dollar a day, they would work for :fifty cents, and work just as hard as they would have worked for a dollar. If you can n0t make great spiritual gain do not fold your hands and do nothing. Make some gain each day, even if you have to work hard for it. This is the road to success.c. E. o.
