W. BORTMASS. ('Bnt sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that Rsketh you a reason of the hope that is in YOll with meekness and fear." 1 Pet. 3: 15. The Lord God here is Jesus Christ; and to have hi~ sanctified is to have him in our life, permeating our whole being; it is to have Christ enthroned in our hearts so that he becomes our life. "He that hath the Son hath life, afld he that hath not the Son of God hath .not life.," g:esus told the J e'WS that he came that ,,:t~y might ha.~e life ana. that they might have); 'it" :m:JJte abundantly. But they were ~ting:. ,i$" :the mw 'and di<i$ot .ss't nation 'receIve hiin. So they failed to get life, for the law could not give life; if so, ((righteousness should have beGn by the law." Gal. 3: 21. The mission of J csus to thjs world was to abolish death and to bring lifo and immorta.lity to light through the gospel. 2 '1'im. 1: 10. This life is in Christ. To have it we must be dead to sin. "If Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness." Rom, 8: 10. So it is Christ ill us, the hope of glory; and if he be in us, "ve have sorr..ething more than life; for he says that he is the 'way, the truth, and the life. So we should be truthful in our business. Our word should be as good as a government bone1. His word should be at par, and that is the only way we can adorn the doctrine of Chri.s~. vVe are either adorning the doctrine or bringing reproach on the cause. How can "vo have this life? We must get it as Paul got it. In Gal. 2; 20 he says, "I am crucified with Christ." Now, we do not understand that he had been put to death in the flesh and had been resurrected. We shall understand it better "iThen we read another scripture, where he says that he was crucified to the world and the world to him. But he says, "Nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me." Now, he had put off the old man and put on the new man, which was created in righteousness and true holiness. lIe got a new heart and a new life; but he lived it in the same body of flesh. It was no more Saul of Tarsus, but Paul, the new man with Christ in him; and the liie he now. lived he lived by the faith or the SO.n of Ged. So it was Christ in him, the hope of glory; and unless Christ is in us and in our lives, we have no hope. Oh, how many there are who profess and do not prove it by their lives! If we have Christ, we must have his life and be the light of this world. To come short of the Christ-life will be to come short of heaven and to go down to an awful hell. What you sow that shall you reap. • I • The Lord tells Hi:; tu ,> prove" (test) him, lmt none can snfilt;ielltly do tl;is unless tlh'Y ha\'~ faith in him.
