COPLlN. rhe term salvation as used in the New Testamellt implies deliverance from sin. It is only by repentance that we can obtain deliverance from our transgressions and the power of sin. Christ came to free us from all this, hence he sa.id, "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed" ( John 8: 36). The man who repents of his sins and believes on the Lord Jesus Christ is made free indeed.' He is free from his past sins for Gael has blotted them all out (Acts 3: 19). He is free from all as "There is therefore now nO condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus" (Rom. 8: 1). He is free from the power of sin for the law or the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made him free from the law of sin and death (Rom. 8: 2). He is made alive in Christ, and hoas become a new creature (Eph. 2: 1;2 Cor. 5: 17). Ife is now a king and a priest unto God and he reigns in this life over the POWel' of sin" and Satan by one Jesus Christ (1 Pet. 2: 5, 9; Rom. 5: 17). 'rhis is truly the gIoriousblood-bought 'privilege of everyone who will come to the Liord with all his' heart. 0 wondrous grace 'or God 1 V\71ell may men and angels' voices blend in ;praise to his great name. . ••• THE "WHY" OF GOD'S COMMAN±rMENT~ "The, things which God enjoined upon man were not so enjoined because God had the advantage of man ,and could demand of him whatsoeV01' he desired; but because in the doing of thcscthings lay man's greatest protectiQll against the assaults of the devil." Goel did not say, "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he WIll have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will ahundantly p?-rdon" (Isa. 55: 7), for the mere reason that he is thenlmjghty God and therefore could dictate to man; but because that 'wicked "ways and unrighteous th.ol.1ghtscontaminate men's souls and hring 'upon them sure destruction. Again he said.: "If riches i1cr,~ase, sef-, not· YOlll' hear,t upon theni" (Psa. 62: 10) . This was not because God desires us to live ill povertyhere below, but ilis wisdom sa"y the d~ngel', and his loving voice' sent the warning that you and I might escape the snare set so skilfully, and not getentanglec1 ill Satan's net. 'V\7 hen he said, "Be not conformed to thlis worhl: but beye transform~d" (Rom.. 12:2), he well knew the danger there; and it was in his Father-love and care that he thus commanded us. Likewise he said, "The just shall live by faith" (I-Ieb. 10: 38) ; but neither is there despotism in this. He knew the. human make-up, and how uncertain feelings are, and that we would need a ~more solid rock than feelings upon which to build our hopes. He knew that sometimes our eyes see only the cloud, and he would have us believe that the sun is still shining, rather than, because we can not see it, to think it has ceased to shine. o brother, sister, do you sometimes ask why? God knows best. He requires nothing of us save wha.tis for our good and to make our soul a' success. II •• SATISFACTION IN JESUS. Sinner, do you feel that longing, craving in your heal~ for satisfaction? There is a feel~ iug of restlessness, or dissatisfaction, "like the troubled sea when it can not rest, whod3 7Vaters cast up mire and dirt." There is a constant cnaving for s3ltisfaction. You seek in one walk of life and then another. Long ago the church was held out to you, and you thought to find heart-satisfaction within her gates. You joined; you took part in her Sunday-school, her young peo:ple'sendeavors, and in her socials as "well . Yet there was that longing, craving, dissa.tisfaction in your heart. Then you tried another vya.y. You decided that love was life, and that. therefore the thing for you to do was to lov~,. ma.l.'ry, and then be ha:RPY. You loved; you married; you settled down; butalalS! rrhat inward voice was not yet stilled! You started into business, hoping some da)' to become wealthy and infiuential, and to be happy. But you failed. N ow you have decided that the way to b'e happy js to throwaway restraint and responsibility, live in idleness and the gratifications of your human :passions and desires. 011, fatal path, leading down to hell! Yes, you have tried every other path, you think, but this one; now you are going to try it. Friend, Jesus pleads with you, do not. It is too often the last, the fatal path! the path to- dissipation, to ruin. The path that destroys every. element or hope and ambition that now lives in your bosom; that sinks you' to miserable depths Jand tJt:ere robs you, or strength or desire to rise; for should you. rise from that. horriWe pit, would not societysniell' the foulness upon your garments an€l;,trwn ;from you in scorn? Could you ever again take your place in the world-you with the inevitable lines of dissipation and guilt upon your face? Thus you would rather remain in your pit of degradation, away from society, away from even one ray of light from the good 'and pure, than to undergo the struggles to rise. God help you; you will never find satisfaction there. Sinner, you need the' comfort and sola co) of J esns. You need what he offers Who said, "Colle unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matt. 11: 28). You need Jesus to speak "Peace, be still" to your restless spirit. You need to drink of tho Water of I.1ife. "Ho, everyone that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, 'and he that hath no money; come ye, buy and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money, and without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not b]~ead ~ and your labor for that which sn.tis:fieth not.? harken diligently unto me, and eaiye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in :fatness" (Isa. 55: 1, 2). "Tho Spirit and the bride sa.y, Come. Andlat him that henl'cth say, Come. . And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely" (Rev. 22: 17). "JeSlls stooel :-mcl cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him cO~'ne unto me and drink" (John 6: 37). You need :to eat of the Bread of Life. J eSllS said, (& I am that bread of life ... my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood 1S drink indeed" (John '6.: 48, 55). Sinner, you need J esns ! Joining a cln'l ech and trying to.be what you think is {\, Oh:L'isti;.m, will not satisfy you; nothing "NiH satisfy you but Jesus. --_...I.' : -<c........-.. __ o poor creatures, who pass all your .time ill feeding upon the gifts of God, and think thercdn to be the most favored and happy, how I pity YOll if you stop here, short of the tru~ rest, ana cease to go forward to God himself, through the loss of those cherished gifts which yon now delight in. How many pass all their lives in this way and think highly of themselves .thel'ein ! There are others who being calleel of Gael to die to themselves, yet pass all their time in a dying life ·and in inward agonies, without ever entering into God, through de-a:th and a total loss of self, because they are always willing to rc~ tain something under plausible pretexts, and so never lose themseltestothe whole extenr of the designs of Gael. WHAT DOES SALV!TION IlVIPLY~

rhe term salvation as used in the New Testamellt
implies deliverance from sin. It is only
by repentance that we can obtain deliverance
from our transgressions and the power of sin.
Christ came to free us from all this, hence he
sa.id, "If the Son therefore shall make you free,
ye shall be free indeed" ( John 8: 36).

THE "WHY" OF GOD'S COMMAN±rMENT~
