"Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace" (Job 22! 21). When God made man, he made him to. be a companion for himself; in fact, man is so constituted that there is no hope of peace for him as long as he is 'estrarigedfrom God. And this accounts for the great spirit ~f ,U1)l'cstc 'in the world today: people are try·ing to obtain peace by acquainting ihemst:lves with the varied scenes of nature; some are seeking the ae'· quaintance of great an.d notable persons of earth, but none of these things can give peace. Solomon says, "I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet, acquainting· my heart with wisdom; and t:0 lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life. I made me great;works;1 builded me houses; I planted ,me vineya.cds: ! made me gardens and orchards, and I planted . me trees in them of all kind, of fruits: I made me pools ofwate~,to water tlierewitJ1 the wobcl that bringeth forth trees: I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in, my house; also I had great possessions' of great and, small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before lne: I gathered me also silver and gold, and The pecuJiar treasure of kings and of provinces:' I got me men singers andvvomcn' $ingers,aItd th~ d~lights of the sons ofmen'"a:~" n.t1J.~ica~in~trt1~ ments, and that of. all sorts:·'So I~ia$ g~:~t"~~~ increased more than all that, wereb~~Oi~~e,;tn. Jerusalem: also nlY wisdom. Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the hibor that I had labored to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit" (Becl. 2:'3-11). Many now are following the same course that Solomon tried, onl" to learn the same 'lesson, at the school, if, like Solomon, they are fortunate enough to retain their wisdom through" their experience. But no doubt there are many whose wisdom does not remain with them, for they do not stop to look upon, their w{)rks and consider them. To such God says in J er. 16: 20, 21 : , 'Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they a·.re no gods 1 Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is The Lord." So if men will not seek to know the Lord, yet he will be known of them bY' his hand and his might. But the LQrd would have all to know and acquaint themselves with Aim willingly. God says of those who seek him andgeta,c- . quainted· with him that they shall not.teac:h "every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they all shall know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them. " And to such he says, "Peace I leave with*you, lhY' peace I give unto yo.u: not as the WQ:t:"ld giveth, give I unto you. IJe.t not your heart be troubled, neither let it he afraid" (John 14: 27). He lived an innocent and simple life. He was holy and unspotted from the world. His love kneW' no bounds, and concerning charity--he gave the world the best he possessed, namely, his life. Blis answers· to OppOs&3 were logical and reasonable, His reproofs were severe, but charitable. His poverty was great, yet his gifts were many. Hus meekness' can not be estimated. He often wept. He cried 3rt the grave of Lazarus, and wept overJ erusaiem. He never turned away a crry for· mercy. He loved. all men, and acted it out in every way possible. He never . boasted. His voic:e was not heard on the streets. Hie was the sinner's friend, and is yet. He kept every promise made. lIe told Martha that sitting at his feet was bet.. ter than "ilml'lch serving."
