Son,"" Members of the DePauw's women's basketball team, after a 45·minute wait, finally see they will get a bid and a bye In the NCAA Division III Tournament. The team gathered in the Did Gold Room to watch the NCAA press conference announcing their invitation. DePauw to play for the I ' National Championship by Scott Weaver , The DePauw women's basketball team rini shed out the regular season with a record 14·game win ni ng streak which earned the 14th ranked Tigers a spot in the national tourname nt. That wasn't a sur· pnse. Neither was the first round bye they received. ''That gives us a lillie more time to pre· pare," coach Kris Huffman said. "When you're playing on Wednesday, you're scrambling. It's nice that the we have a lit· tic bitillore time to get ready for the ball· game. The kids can rest their bodies. They're kind of banged up, so we'll piece them together, hopefully a few more times." The team found out that they would he playing in the national tournament Sunday night. They all sat in the Old Gold room in the Lilly Center and watched the .. drawin gs on TV. The announcement was a bit less emo· tionalthan two years ago, when the Tigers were on the bubble. With their 22·4 ~ See game story, page 16. ~ See photo spread, page 15, record and 14th nati onal ranking, DePauw was almost ass ured of a tou rna· ment birth. The Ti gers earned the number two ranking in the Great Lakes region, and along with it a bye. DePauw plays the winner of the Hope College and Baldwin· Wallace College game Sat urday at 3 p.m. at DePauw. "We're excitcd to be playing at home," Huffman said. "We've had great fan sup· port all season. I hope they come out and do it again with us." This is the second time in three years that the Tigers have made the national tournament. 1\1'0 years ago, DePauw lost in the first round to the eventual national champions, Wisconsin ·Oshkosh. But being winless in the tournament isn't wor· rying the Tigers. "We have a very good chance of mov· ing on." said junior back.up point guard Paula Boback. "We' re not sati sfied with just being there." Boback made the trip to Wisconsin in 1996 to play the Titans. After the loss and the long bus ride home that same night, $he learned how DePauw wi ll have to approach their first post·season game. "You have to play every practice like it's your last," she said. Coach Huffman gave the team Monday ofT, but the Tigers will be busy preparing the rest of the week for Baldwin· Wallace, a heavy favorite to beat Hope. The Baldwin· Wallace Yellow Jackets spentmosl of their season ranked third in the Great Lakes Region. Conversely, the Tigers rode a late·sea· son jump in the rankings to grab their number two Great Lakes ranking. The 14· game win streak combined with a surprise loss by once number two ranked Capital helped the Tigers secure H first·round bye. DePauw finished their season with two wins in the conference tournament. After SEE TOURNEY, PAGE 15 IFC, Panhel to vote on SRC changes -) by Rebecca Ellis After a barrage of alcohol· related incidents, accidents, arrests and bad publicity on campus, the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Coun ci ls arc reforming their social rul es. Over the past several weeks, mem· hers and pres idents of all greek orga· nizations on campus have been meet· ing to develop a new set of partying rules. Panhel and IFC wi ll vote on the new policy tomorrow ni ght. Tbis academic year fi ve houses have been put on soc ial probation for alcohol·related vio lations. A Monon Bell weekend party was mentioned in a .US News and World Report article on binge drinkin g, and the offi ce of student se rvices put on an all·campus convocation on alcohol abuse in the wake of alcohol·related deaths on other campuses. Junior Jen ny Kline, Panhel pres i. dent, said Panhel and IFC arc tryi ng to reform their soc ial policy to respond to campus concerns about aleohol·related dangers. "We don't need a deat h to wake up this campus," Kline said. "We can either take charge and be leaders and stop some of this from goin g on, or we' re going to lose our greek system. If we don't do Ihis now .. . tru stees wi ll step in and make it a dry cam· pus." The goals of this policy are sim· pic, said Kline: to make campus par· tics safer, to reduce fraternities' and sorori ties' li ability and to put the responsibility back in the hands of the individual. The proposed policy would bring two major changes to fraternity par· tics. First, parties would be BYOB (Bring Your Own Beverage). Second, fraternity houses would be monitored by a chapter visitor team (CVT) of three members each weekend. The team would be drawn from all frater· nities' risk management commillees. Kline said sorority women will not participate in CVTs because the National Pan hellenic Council rules prohibit members from monitoring parties. SEE CHANGES, PAGE 4
