"Sympathy for Ihose guys? Absolutely not," Gregor said. ''11lOse guys are over 18, they' re from well-established fami lies, and they've got good heads on their shoulders. They just used very poor judgment." Housing corporations, the alumni landlords of greek houses, essentially own DePauw's greek houses and make many of their rules. Sorority and fraternity members pay dues to their housing corporations, which in tum make decisions about the physical maintenance of the house. The four men who are accused of breaking into the Kappa house lasl Thursday allegedly broke in through the back of the house, stole a composite photo and a parlor chair valued at more than $800 and then burned the chair in front of the Sigma Chi house. The mel1, all members of Sigma Chi fraternity, are juniors Scoll Bums and William Lobe, sophomore Walter Moore and freshman Benjamin Reeh. They enlered preliminary not-guilty pleas in court last weekend. Gregor said she docsn't blame Sigma Chi for Ihe incident, but docs hold Ihe individuals responsible for Iheir alleged actions. The crimes commilled, she said, wi ll reflect on the Sigma Chi house whether the breakin was a house-sponsored event or not. 'nlOugh Gregor said she docsn't Ihink the four men's actions were vindictive, she bhL~tcd them for going overboard with a prank. "They just can't do that," she said. "It's a real world out there, and in other situations, the consequences would be more severe," Gregor said she knows compositestealing is a DePauw tradition, but the 111llrsday incident jusllVCnl too far. ''The I Kappal house is just an innocent victim in this case," Gregor said. ''11lis is a situation where these men went above and beyond a rratemily prank in about fi ve differenl ways." TIle Kappas and their housing corporalion are still assessing damages and still are uncertain about the action they will take. Gregor said she and the other housing corporation members are scheduled 10 meet with members of Kappa on Sunday. Some members of Kappa would not return phone calls, and others refused to comment. Teresa Loser, dean of greek affairs-, said the University has notlaken any diseiplinary action in the case yet and that a University diseipline board will deal with the four men in the same manner they would deal with any other siudent. Loser also said the men will receive lellers from the student affairs office within the next few days that will initiate the disciplinary process. Alan Hill, dean of students, said he hopes a campus-wide discussion will emerge from this event. Traditions like composite-stealing, he said, arc difficult ones to change and only a dialogue between students will bring about any real change on Ihe issue.
