Dance music thumped across campus from Alpha Phi sorority just after 10:30 Sunday night. and screaming women streamed out of the house into Locust Street. Waving their sorority paddles, dancing and chanting. the women stopped their party only for passing cars. But the noise carried tension into the quiet lobby of Mason Hall. About 15 women sat clustered on the maroon couches. chatting anxiously. Senior Julie Egner, their rush counselor, walked in with a stack of envelopes. each one holding an invitation. Egner distributed the stack slowly. As they waited for the signal, women flipped the cards over, some jittered it in their hands, others held it up to the light, yearning for it to reveal the secret inside. "One, two, ... three," Egner said, as count three was muffled by the women ripping open the envelopes like Christmas presents. Then came the screams, and women started hugging each other. Sorority rush was finally over. The women had participated in various get-to-know-you activities throughout fall semester, then spent four straight nights watching rush presentations, chatting, and paring down their choices. The Mason residents were among 226 women who ran across campus to their respective sororities. NEWS Is the Winter Term party over? Four chapters - Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Phi, Kapp< Alpha Theta and Kappa Kappa Gamma - took 36 women, according to numbers released by greek affairs at 11:30 Sunday night. While quota was 34, Panhellenic Council traditionally allows such quota additions. Pi Beta Phi missed quota by one. Delta Gamma had 28 pledges. Delta Zeta had the fewest with 21. Once again, however, a significant number of women found no home. The number of women who were crosscut, or had no further invitations from chapters, totaled 21 this year, up from 17 last year. Five were cut after the first round this year, while 12 were cut after second round. Unlik<l last year, when 13 women were cross-cut after the final rush round, only four women found themselves cross-cut after final round this year. "If! knew how difficult it was going to be to tell girls they were Icross cutl ... ," Egner said. Seven women from Mason and Rector halls were crosscut.
